Search Engine Optimization Stuffed Sites Targeted by Google Again

Google PenguinGoogle’s affinity for naming its preventive initiatives after animals that start with the letter “p” has been confirmed once again, with the company revealing the internal code name “penguin” for the update that was initially called the “overoptimization filter” and later the “webspam algorithm.”

The Penguin moniker was revealed when search engine blogs were about to give the update their own name, the “Titanic” – and thus, that name was squashed and Google Penguin was officially underway.

The initiative was first announced during SXSW in March, when Google head of web spam Matt Cutts announced as a side note during his speaking panel that Google was releasing an algorithm update specifically designed to target sites that go overboard on SEO. According to Cutts, this is Google’s attempt to “level the playing field” between webmasters that build quality content versus webmasters who are just really aggressive SEOs.
